As another year passes, it is important to take a minute to step back and reflect at the year gone by. It was a year ago today, that I had my first ostomy surgery. After months of being sick, I woke up to find my family and girlfriend huddled around me. They told me that things were worse than the surgeon had anticipated. The surgeons had removed 6 inches of my colon and given me a colostomy bag and 40 staples down my stomach, instead of the ileostomy that was discussed before going under.
It’s interesting to reflect on moments that may have changed the course of your life or think about the “meant to” happen moments. Moments like your graduations, your wedding day(s), your kids, your successes, your failures, your divorce(s). 🙂 Having an ostomy placed is definitely one of those moments.
If it weren’t for that moment:
I probably wouldn’t be a passionate advocate for Crohn’s or ostomies.
I probably wouldn’t have attended a support group to find some of the funniest and most resilient people I know.
I probably wouldn’t have known about the amazing non-profits that work tirelessly to empower and encourage others.
I probably wouldn’t have a business where we help people to feel more confident and beautiful every day.
I definitely wouldn’t be a co-owner of an underwear business. That’s just crazy talk.
Many people can say to themselves, ”Why did this happen to me?”. Luckily, I know why and I am so grateful. Every day is a blessing & we are so thrilled to know that many of you are happy with our products. There is so much in the hopper that we are excited to introduce to you over the next year.
Happy Stomaversary to me and thank you for being a part of my journey and my life.
